HEILE
2 Apr 1936 – 24 Oct 2000 (aged 64)
Father Edwin Heile, Diocese of Covington
Rev. Edwin Bernard Heile was a man of many talents for the Diocese of Covington.
Father Heile worked at Covington Latin School from 1960 to 1983 and ran the athletic department before becoming headmaster.
He later became pastor at two churches – St. Patrick’s in Taylor Mill and All Saints Church in Walton.
Known as “Big Ed” because of his stature and booming voice, Father Heile was known for his strong opinions and compassion, said a colleague and former student, Rev. James Ryan of Elsmere.
“He could, with one bellow, get order. The students nicknamed him “Big Ed, ” Father Ryan said. “He was powerful. He was energetic and muscular.”
Father Heile, 64, of Elsmere, died at 3:45 p.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a priest for the Diocese of Covington.
Father Heile grew up in Fort Mitchell. The son of a banker, he learned how to be fiscally responsible while running schools and churches.
Father Heile enjoyed camping and was an authority on baseball and football, said Father Ryan, the pastor of St. Henry Church in Elsmere.
In fact, one of Father Heile’s favorite students was David Justice, now left fielder for the New York Yankees, Father Ryan said.
“The day the Yankees went to Seattle, David called Ed. That made his day; Ed lit up like a Christmas tree, ” Father Ryan said.
“I’m sure he wish he would have been able to see the completion of the World Series from down here. But I feel he will be able to see the rest of it from where he is now.”
Father Heile is survived by an aunt, Mary Elizabeth Heile, and an uncle, Ralph Heile, both of Fort Mitchell; and several cousins.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Blessed Sacrament Church, Fort Mitchell.
Visitation and Reception of the Body will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the church and from 9 to 9:30 a.m. Monday at the church.
